The Meanings of Easter FlowersPopular Easter Flowers and Their Meanings

Easter is a wonderful time to gift those you love with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Celebrated in spring in the UK, Easter is a Christian feast that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is therefore fitting to choose flowers that reflect the themes of this time such as new life, purity, new beginnings. Discover which flowers should adorn your home this Easter and which flowers you should give to friends and family during these celebrations.

The Easter Lily

As the name reveals, this particular lily is a popular flower to gift at Easter and also to adorn the lunch table on Easter Sunday. It is believed that the trumpeted shape of the flower symbolises the trumpeting of the news of Jesus’ resurrection. Many also say that the white hue of the flower signifies the purity of Christ. Many paintings show the Angel Gabriel giving Easter Lilies to The Virgin Mary. Another reason why lilies may be so popular at Easter is that there is a story that says lilies sprouted from the tears of Eve’s as they landed on the ground when she was banished from the Garden of Eden.

Tulips

These beautiful springtime flowers are extremely popular at Easter. Many associate these pretty blooms with the return of springtime. Tulips also signify perfect love which is particularly pertinent at Easter as Christians believe Jesus Christ died and resurrected for the sins of the people. White tulips symbolise purity, reverence and humility. Pink tulips signify youth, innocence and joy. Besides holding much meaning at Easter, tulips also make for stunning table centre decorations.

The Iris

These flowers have been associated with lent and Easter for many years. It is thought that the three prong-like upright petals of the Iris symbolise the three virtues, which are Faith, Hope and Charity. The name, Iris, is from the Greek word for Rainbow which describes the many colours of Iris available.

Daffodils

The Meanings of Easter FlowersThe daffodil is a vibrant flower that signals the beginning of spring for many people. Daffodils are also sometimes called the Lenten Lily as they usually bloom between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. The trumpet shape of the petals lends itself to the belief that the flower is heralding the Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection. Daffodils are a thoughtful bloom to gift to parents at Easter, and it is traditional for children to present the bright flowers to their mothers on Easter Sunday.

Azaleas

Azalea belongs to the rhododendron genus and has many meanings. There are approximately 1000 varieties of this flower with an entire rainbow of colours available. The azalea symbolises great wealth, femininity and softness. It could be said that the great wealth could refer to the riches of heaven and the femininity and softness to Jesus’ mother, Mary. The beautiful azalea is an excellent choice for the Easter centrepiece as it is a delicate addition and unobtrusive while being decorative.

Daisies

Often thought of as a juvenile flower, the innocence of the daisy can be all that is needed to adorn your home this Easter. From the tiny daisies children use to make daisy chains and crowns, to the larger and more colourful variety of gerbera daisy, daisies are a pretty reminder that spring has sprung. Use daisies for individual place settings during an Easter time garden party or place them around your home for an instant pick-me-up.

Enjoy choosing the perfect Easter blooms for your Easter celebration, and gift springtime bouquets to your nearest and dearest this Easter.
